  • Bear Closure - Commonwealth Valley

    Effective:  September 24, 2022

      • Effective Date:  September 24, 2022 until further notice
      • Where:  Commonwealth Valley, Tryst Lake Valley, small valley surrounding Birdwood Lakes, and includes access trail from the Shark Road.
      • Why: A bluff charge occurred in the area by a female grizzly bear with cub.

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in the Kananaskis Region at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

    • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
    • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
    • Keep your pet on a leash.
    • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray.

      • Effective Date: September 12, 2022 until further notice
      • Where: William Watson Lodge Campground

  • Construction Closure - Elbow Pass Day Use Area, Little Highwood Pass Day Use Area and Elbow Lake Backcountry Campground

    Effective:  June 15, 2022

      • Effective Date: June 15, 2022 (or immediately upon the Hwy 40 winter gate opening) to November, 2022
      • Where: Please be advised that Alberta Environment and Parks is closing the area encompassing Elbow Pass Day Use Area, Little Highwood Pass Day Use Area, Elbow Pass trail from Elbow Pass Day Use Area to Elbow Lake, Elbow Lake Backcountry Campground and surrounding areas.

*Pocaterra Ridge is closed from just past the summit north to Little Highwood Day Use Area (see map). Hikers can travel up to the summit from Highwood Meadows Day Use Area, but then must return back the same way.

      • Why:

      - Construction crews will be on site upgrading parking lots, trails and the backcountry campground.

      - To reduce danger to hikers equestrian users and climbers as contractors work in the area falling trees, moving heavy equipment around and hauling asphalt for paving.

      - There is no alternative for safe parking and trail access.

      - It is more time and cost effective. The contractor needs to be able to work efficiently without keeping track of the public in the area. Environment and Parks wants to complete the project as efficiently as possible.

Conservation Officers will enforce the area closure under the Provincial Parks Act. Do not cross construction barriers and follow all signage.

Visitors looking for alternatives can call the Kananaskis Information Line at (403) 678-0760 or stop by a Kananaskis Information Centre.

      • Where: Valleyview Road from Elpoca Day Use Area to HWY 40 (South) near Little Highwood Day Use Area, including Valleyview Day Use Areas.
      • Why: Frequent bear activity in this area
