Regulations

Conservation Officers are Provincial Peace Officers with authority to enforce the Provincial Parks Act and various other provincial and federal statutes.

The following additional regulations are specific to the Sikome Aquatic Facility.

  • Parents must be within arm’s reach of children aged 7 and under at all times.
  • It is recommended that all children and individuals unable to swim utilize an approved FDA personal flotation device. A limited number of life jackets are available on site for free use through the Lifejacket Loaner Station program. 
  • Unsupervised children are not permitted.  Children 12 years of age and under must be accompanied by an adult (18 +) to enter the facility.  Adults must remain with the children for the duration of the visit. 
  • To meet supervision requirements, a minimum of 1 adult for every 5 children under the age of 12 is required.  Families or groups not meeting this requirement will be refused entrance to the facility.
  • All children under three years of age must wear an appropriate swim diaper and plastic pants while in the water.
  • Alcohol and cannabis are prohibited.
  • Sikome is a smoke/vape free facility.  There are designated smoking areas outside the entry gates. 
  • Breakable containers (glass, ceramic, etc) are not permitted.
  • Pets are not permitted.
  • Guide and assisted living dogs are permitted.  Assistance dogs must be on a leash at all times and are not permitted in the water.
  • Propane gas barbeques are permitted on grassed areas only. Set up is not permitted on paved walkways or Gate A (Main) seating area.  Wood or charcoal/briquette barbeques are not permitted.
  • Fully enclosed tents are not permitted.  Large stand up style canopies are permitted on the south ½ of the facility.  These units must be set up on grassed areas and properly secured. Set up is not permitted on the sand.
  • The use of PA systems, large music speakers or amplifiers is not permitted. Loud music that disturbs the enjoyment of others is prohibited.
  • Only small inflatables and plastic beach toys are allowed. 
  • The following items are prohibited for use in the facility:
    • scuba gear (tanks, fins, full face masks, snorkels)
    • large rafts, paddles, skim boards, paddle boards and hard bottomed boats (kayaks, canoes, etc.)
    • mermaid style swim fins that bind feet together
    • large party floats
    • metal shovels or gardening tools
    • bikes, rollerblades skateboards or scooters
    • drones, kites, remote controlled airplanes and toys
    • sports equipment (baseball bats, golf clubs, croquette mallets, lacrosse sticks, bow and arrows, ax throwing kits, etc)
  • Occasionally, some sporting equipment (eg footballs, badminton equipment) may be permitted at the discretion of the supervisor on duty.  Permission will vary day to day and is based on weather and facility attendance. Use will be limited to specific locations around the facility as identified by staff.

Alberta Parks is committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for staff and visitors.  Physical or verbal abuse and inappropriate behavior or comments may result in refusal of service or removal from the facility. In addition, Conservation Officers have the authority to immediately suspend any activity deemed to be detrimental to someone else’s enjoyment of the facility

 

Accessibility

  • Sikome has a beach wheelchair for loan on a first come, first served basis. This enables people with reduced mobility to access the beach and water.
  • The beach wheelchair is available at the Water Safety Centre, located beside the north change room (north east corner of the facility).
  • Contact information/ID must be provided to borrow the chair. Sikome staff will give users a brief overview on safe use of the chair.
  • Children under 18 years of age must have parental consent to borrow the chair.

Safety & First Aid

Safety Ambassadors

  • monitor facility activity
  • patrol the beach and provide water safety education when required
  • provide basic first aid
  • provide assistance to visitors as required/requested

Safety Ambassadors are NOT lifeguards.  You are responsible for your personal safety and the safety and supervision of children.

Emergencies

Water closures may be implemented in the event of an emergency.  During an emergency event, follow direction given, stay clear of the accident or emergency area and cooperate by following staff and emergency personnel instructions.

Weather Hazards

Occasionally, unforeseen weather hazards occur.  For the safety of visitors and staff, when threatening weather hazards such as thunder, lightning, hail, strong winds etc. is in the area, access to the beach and water may be suspended.

Visitors are requested to find shelter until the storm passes. An announcement will be made to advise when it is safe to resume beach and water activity.

 Admission refunds are not given for emergencies, water closures or weather events that occur at any point during your visit.

 

On-Site Available Services

  • Change rooms and showers
  • Three playgrounds are located within the fence lines
  • Limited picnic tables
  • Bike racks (located in the parking lots outside the fence)
  • Concession: Located in GATE A (Main) building. Hot dogs, sandwiches, snacks, frozen treats and soft drinks are available for purchase.
  • Beach Shop: A limited selection of beach supplies are available for purchase. Towels, sunscreen, swim diapers, hats, umbrellas, assorted inflatables, reusable water bottles.

Road Access and Parking

Parking is permitted in designated parking spots only. Parking is prohibited along or adjacent to roadways and in all areas designated as “no parking”.  Parking regulations are strictly enforced. Vehicles in violation may be ticketed or towed.

There are 3 parking lots available:

  • NW parking and entry is accessible from Sun Valley Blvd SE. – open daily
  • NE parking and entry is accessible from Bow Bottom Tr. SE – open daily
  • South parking and entry is accessible from both Sun Valley Blvd and Bow Bottom Tr. SE - open Saturdays, Sundays and holidays to mid August (weather permitting).
  • Overflow parking is available at the South entrance lot. Visitors parking in the south/overflow lot on weekdays, are required to park, then walk to the north entrances to pay admissions and enter/exit the facility.

Water Quality

Sikome is classified as a “man-made beach”. Three fresh water wells supply the water for Sikome; no water is taken from the Bow River. Water quality criteria for man-made beaches is not the same as public swimming pools. A water treatment plant on site ensures water quality.

Every week, water samples are taken from different areas of the lake. The samples are analyzed at the Foothills hospital and results are forwarded to Alberta Health Services and Fish Creek Provincial Park maintenance.
