Outpost Wetlands Natural Area is located just west of Police Outpost Provincial Park adjacent to the Montana border.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada, in cooperation with the Government of Alberta, provided funding for acquisition of this important natural area.
Birding: Species include mountain bluebird, trumpeter swan, common loon, eastern kingbird, American goldfinch and common snipe. In order to protect sensitive nesting habitat, a complete closure of this natural area occurs each year from April 1 to July 31.
Hunting: Outpost Wetlands encompasses a small parcel of land with species at risk present. Hunters are reminded to consider this, and the safety and activities of other recreational users (such as school groups studying the wetland and bird watchers in camouflaged blinds) while accessing the Natural Area. As well, hunters are advised of the adjacent campground in Police Outpost Provincial Park, the onsite staff/contractors who are present as well as surrounding private residences outside the Provincial Park. While provincial hunting seasons do apply in this natural area, hunters are asked to use extreme caution if considering big game hunting with a rifle. This natural area shares a fence with the United States border so hunters are advised that crossing the border to retrieve game, to access other land to hunt or while in possession of a firearm/weapon may involve violating federal and provincial/state laws in both countries. Grizzly bear frequent this area and closures are sometimes imposed to prevent human-wildlife conflict.

Natural Region Description	This natural area is bisected by a meltwater channel into which Boundary Creek flows and is divided into three distinct areas. The northeast portion has south-facing grasslands with bedrock outcrops and patches of horizontal juniper and other wildflowers. The southwest portion is comprised of the lower slope of Chief Mountain which, although covered mostly with aspen forest, contains several open meadows and ravines. In the centre, there is a large wetland - one of the few remaining in the region.
