Hunting in Wildcat Island Natural Area

This is a small parcel of land so hunters are reminded to consider the distance to nearby residences, the safety of other recreational users and the activities underway (such as anglers walking the river and camping by river travelers). The majority of this natural area is within Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) 320 but the adjacent floodplain/island may vary from year to year; when facing downstream it’s the right bank of the river that forms the boundary between the WMUs.

Natural Region Description

This natural area is an island in the Bow River 6 km downstream of Ghost Dam. The island is sheltered with a canopy of white spruce. A layer of scattered shrubs makes walking around the island relatively easy. Most of the ground on the island is covered with a thick layer of moss and creeping juniper. Aspen and balsam poplar are scattered throughout the island and concentrated in a stand on the southeast corner.
