This park includes the former Sheep River Wildlife Sanctuary and provides year-round habitat for bighorn sheep. Most of the park is located in the Rocky Mountain Natural Region, except for the eastern portion which extends into the foothills where open grassy slopes provide winter range for the elk and deer that spend summers in high alpine areas to the west.
