Stewards

Stewards share an interest in protecting Alberta's natural heritage and help monitor conservation efforts in Alberta's parks system. Since the program’s inception in the late 1980’s, nearly 300 individual stewards and 60 organizations have participated in this initiative in more than 130 sites.

    Types & Duties of Stewards

Stewards independently help monitor conditions at select sites. Many of these sites are remote or undeveloped. Their observations alert us to the unique management needs of the sites they observe. Information from their site inspection reports is used to update our site database and informs local management decisions.

    Stewards

    • Are generally linked with one or two sites
    • Are requested to visit site(s) at least twice per year to observe, record and report on natural conditions and human activities, including any vandalism or unauthorized activity.
    • Complete and submit an inspection report form reflecting their observations
    • Are independent site observers. In performing their observations they:
        • Are not compensated or under contract
        • Do not legally represent the Government of Alberta
        • Do not have enforcement authorities or responsibilities.
    • Are considered active if they have submitted an inspection report within one calendar year.

Both individuals and organizations can be stewards.
