Where: Castle River Day Use , Oldman Dam Provincial Recreation Area

Details: Castle River Day Use is closed to all public access due to grizzly bear activity in the area.

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible and know how to use it.
  • Secure attractants like food, garbage, pet food and any scented items in hard sided vehicles or bear proof lockers.
  • Learn more about bear safety.

Island View Day Use Area is in Oldman Dam Provincial Recreation Area, 10 km northwest of Pincher Creek on Hwy. 3 and 9 km northeast on Hwy. 510. A boat launch and pier make it a good choice for visitors wanting easy access to the water. This is a popular spot for all kinds of water sports. Constant breezes make it an ideal place for sailing and wind surfing.

Amenities

  • Reservoir levels can change throughout the year. To ensure the boat launch and dock is useable, please check the reservoir level through the Alberta River Basins report.
  • Please bring your own water. Water from the hand pump/tap is not safe for consumption or use and should only be used to put out fires.
