The McLeod River Provincial Recreation Area provides an idyllic camping experience in a unique river valley setting. Located only 23 km southeast of Hinton on the Robb Road. Walking trails meander along the riverbank, and the McLeod River Silviculture Trail provides an beautiful interpretive walk or mountain bike ride beneath a canopy of tall spruce forest. The park provides a lovely day-use area along the babbling river with a backdrop of sandstone cliffs. Fire pits and picnic tables are provided for a fun family getaway near the water. Keep your eyes on the sky to spot bald eagles who hunt and nest in this river valley.

The McLeod River headwaters begin just outside of the eastern boarder of Jasper National Park and Whitehorse Wildland Provincial Park. The tributaries are fed by icy cold meltwaters on the western slopes of Tripoli and Cheviot Mountains. The fast river snakes through the Provincial Recreation Area and onwards through rolling foothills, eventually joining the mighty Athabasca River near the town of Whitecourt. The McLeod River is enjoyed by advanced canoers and kayakers during high water levels. Visitors are reminded that fast river currents make for a challenging paddling adventure and should only be attempted by those with adequate training and planning.

Location: 23 km southeast of Hinton on Robb/Hinton road
