Volunteering

Big Lake Environment Support Society (BLESS) was formed in 1991. BLESS has been the official volunteer steward of the site since 2002.

BLESS has worked with Alberta Tourism, Parks & Recreation and other partners to construct and maintain facilities in the park.

    • The wildlife viewing platform at the mouth of the Sturgeon River
    • A picnic shelter along Red Willow Park Trail near the St. Albert Rugby Club
    • Trail improvements between Red Willow Park Trail and the viewing platform
    • Signs related to bird species

BLESS provides educational programming at the little log cabin nature centre at the corner of St. Albert Trail and Sturgeon Road.  The Society also co-ordinates the twice annual bird counts and the Migratory and Breeding Bird Survey

There are also volunteer opportunities in other provincial parks.
