Alberta Parks

Reading the Rocks - Pilot Program

Get ready to Rock your socks off on a 3-hour hiking and bus adventure through Dinosaur Provincial Park’s world-famous geology. This isn't just a tour; it's a journey back in time. Learn to "read the rocks" and uncover a story 75 million years in the making, written in the layers of land beneath our feet, telling tales of an ancient Alberta unlike our own.

What You'll Experience:

Discover a Dynamic Landscape as we guide you through the park's iconic badlands, explaining the powerful forces that shaped them. You'll see that the present is the key to the past and understand how ancient rivers, swamps, and oceans created the very rocks we stand on.

Observe the Evidence Up Close: Our three guided stops will take you to the Park’s geological gems:

  • Dramatic transitions in time and environment; written in the rocks for you to see and touch
  • Rock formations hosting iconic dinosaur fossils and enlightening evidence of volcanism
  • Towering cathedrals of natural architecture, telling the final chapter of the Park’s cretaceous story

Beyond the Dinosaurs: This tour is for anyone curious about our planet's history. While you'll see where some of the world's most significant dinosaur discoveries were made, this program is a stepping stone to deeper appreciation of geological processes. Through hands-on activities and engaging explanations, our mission is to bring a lost world to life so you can understand why geologists feel so sedimental about rocks.
