This beautiful hike offers spectacular views as you ascend the steep slopes above the West Castle Valley. Taking you through a patch of sub-alpine forest, you are rewarded first by the blue-green of Barnaby Lake followed shortly after by Southfork Lakes. Start and end your hike by wading the Castle River. This can vary from knee to waist deep depending on the season.
This shorter trail climbs steeply through the forest to three amazing alpine lakes. A connector trail loops around and connects Barnaby to the South fork Lakes. It is a great place for an overnight camping trip.
Note that this trail requires a major river crossing of the Castle River. It is not recommended during heavy run off periods.
It is possible to scramble up to the top of the ridgeline and continue hiking south for several kilometers. Please be advised: The ridgeline route is unmarked, windy, and some sections may be technical and exposed.
