Saskatoon Mountain Provincial Recreation Area is a part of Alberta’s Dry mixed wood Natural Subregion with aspen, balsam poplar, and white spruce trees. The 940-meter-high mountain is home to a diverse wildlife including over 50 species of birds, 30 species of butterflies, and various mammals including moose, cougars, black bears, and snowshoe hares.
Saskatoon Mountain is a popular site for hiking, picnicking, hunting, cross country skiing, wildlife viewing, and Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) use. The area has a network of informal trails used for an array of motorized and non-motorized recreation activities that are not maintained. A Day Use Area with a small parking lot, picnic tables, fire pits, and an outhouse is available onsite alongside two viewpoints offering scenic views of the natural landscape.
This Provincial Recreation Area has a rich history with the Beaver First Nation who harvested and hunted on the mountain and surrounding areas. In the early 1900s, a number of homesteads were developed but were eventually abandoned or removed. In more modern history, the area saw the development of a radar base first operated by the U.S. Air Force and then the Canadian Forces before being reclaimed in 1989.
Please note that OHV use is restricted to the west side of Range Road 92.
