Bear Warning - Elkwood Campground

August 16, 2017

  • Effective Date: Sunday, August 15, until further notice
  • Where: Elkwood Campground
  • Why: Several bear sightings in the area 

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in Kananaskis Country at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray (video).
  • Learn more about bear safety on our webpage or at WildSmart.

Bear Closure - Boulton Campground Managers Site to Entrance to Loop A

August 09, 2017

  • Effective Date: August 9, 2017 until further notice
  • Where: The trail from the Boulton campground managers site to the entrance to loop A through to the Boulton Store, along with feeder trails from Boulton Bridge, and the trails leading to the Amphitheatre.
  • Why: Bear feeding in the area

Bear Closure - Paved Bike Path from Elkwood Campground to Mt. Sarrail Campground

  • Effective Date: August 7, 2017 until further notice
  • Where: The paved bike path starting from Elkwood campground to Mt Sarrail campground.
  • Why: Grizzly bear feeding on berries in the area

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in Kananaskis Country at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray (video).

  • Where: Interlakes Campground
  • Why: Grizzly bears feeding adjacent to the campground on the Kananaskis Lakes Trail

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in Kananaskis Country at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.

Construction Closure - Canyon Interpretive Trail

June 15, 2017

Due to construction at the Pocaterra Dam on the north end of Lower Kananaskis Lake, the Canyon Interpretive Trail is closed until further notice.

Construction Advisory - William Watson Lodge Cabins

May 12, 2017

There will be cabin construction taking place at William Watson Lodge from April 10th October 31st. Cabins C and D will remain out of commission until the end of October.

  • Where: Valleyview Trail
  • Why: Permanent Bear Closure

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in Kananaskis Country at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

There is a bear closure in place for Valleyview Trail from the gate south of Elpoca Day Use to the gate North of Little Highwood Pass Parking lot. The closure also includes all access to this area from Highway 40.
