Details:

Kananaskis Region is expected to receive snow accumulation over the weekend which may impact travel and recreation activities. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions, especially at higher elevations, and consider rescheduling backcountry activities.

Before heading out:

  • Check the weather forecast and 511 Alberta for road conditions, and be aware that high elevation roads (such as Highway 40 South – Highwood Pass) may have snow and be icy. Winter tires are recommended.
  • Check trail conditions and advisories ahead of time.
  • Leave the details of your trip plan with a responsible person.
  • Hypothermia can occur quickly. Be prepared with waterproof and warm layers and ensure your backpack is packed with winter items. Read more on Winter Safety.
  • Snow can make even easy to moderate trails difficult. Know your limits and hike within them. Proper footwear and equipment are essential (hiking poles, ice grippers, etc.).
  • Carry an emergency communications device. Cellular service is not available in all areas.

A popular trail through mixed forest shared with many hikers with the destination of Troll Falls. Biking not permitted on the short narrow section of trail before the falls.

  1. Random trails around the main waterfall, including walking up to the Troll, have been blocked off due to extreme rockfall hazards. Hikers must stay on the main trails and not climb over or around installed barricades.
  2. For safety reasons please stay on the designated trails and obey all the safety signs and barricades. Significant fall hazards exist beyond the maintained trail and travel beyond the sanctioned trail is not advised due to the potential for serious injury.
