June 9th: Over the last week or two there has been rain, snow and mixed precipitation, leaving trails muddy, with new snow melting quickly to bare ground at lower elevations, and intermittent fresh snow at high elevations. Generally, trails are are mainly bare with muddy sections at lower elevations, with a few patches of snow or ice possible.  At high elevations trails are mainly or partially snow covered, deep in places, with some bare and mud patches. Removal of downed trees from winter blow down is underway, and will continue over the next month or so as snow melts. The paved bike trail is snow free, and has been swept of needles and debris

Always come prepared for a variety of conditions, that can change suddenly throughout the day. You may want to consider bringing hiking poles, micro spikes, toques, gloves and multiple layers.

People seeking alpine objectives should keep in mind that spring avalanches are a potential hazard. Pay close attention to freezing levels, solar radiation and new precipitation (either as rain or snow) at this time of year as avalanche danger has lots of variables.

    Notes:

    • Be aware of avalanche conditions. Current conditions can be found at Avalanche Canada.
    • It's tick season! Make sure to check you and your pets when you get home. For best protection, use a bug repellent with DEET.
    • Practice wildlife safety. Bears are up and active. Travel in groups, make noise on the trail, and keep pets on leash. Carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it is highly recommended, even in winter.
    • Caution is advised for natural hazards such as downed trees. Please report any downed trees on the trails.
    • Be sure not to overestimate your ability when planning your trip: Humility can be a life saver. Plan for rapidly changing conditions and bring extra clothing.

    Snow Depths:

    Highwood Pass: 64 cm

Aster Lake: 127 cm (Last reported June 10th)

    Burstall Pass: 71 cm

    Mud Lake: 8 cm
