Mount Shark

March 6th: Grooming was back at Mt.Shark on Thursday with the normal double shift being completed, an extended break was needed between the morning and afternoon shifts to let temperatures cool to below zero. Since last weeks grooming 10 to 15cm's of snow had accumulated on the trails at Shark some of which melted down to around 5cm's in sunny and south facing areas. By the time grooming operations ended in the early hours of Friday morning the air temperature had dropped just into the low negative teens.  Warm daytime temperatures and below zero nights combined with the moist snow could make for fast icy conditions early in the day with trails softening and slowing as daytime temperatures rise.

There is generally a good base at Mt Shark but a few hazards still exist, such as a few drainage dips and possible exposed ground or rocks (on the two usual tight corners on Ursa Major and Hercules.

Always come prepared for a variety of conditions, that can change suddenly throughout the day. You may want to consider bringing hiking poles, micro spikes, toques, gloves and multiple layers. Snowshoeing, Winter Walking and fat biking are only permitted on the multi-use Watridge Lake trail.

    • Walking, snowshoeing, and fat biking are not permitted on Mt. Shark ski trails, with the exception of the multi-use Watridge Lake Trail.
    • Dogs are permitted on-leash on Mt. Shark ski trails.
    • Be Wildlife Aware. Travel in groups, make noise on the trail, and keep pets on leash. Carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it is highly recommended, even in winter.
    • Caution is advised for natural hazards such as downed trees. Please report any downed trees on the trails.

    Snow Depths:

    Burstall Pass: 199 cm

    Mud Lake: 133 cm
