Bear Closure - Area Surrounding Quarry Lake, Grassi Lakes Day Use and Trails, Powerline and select areas between Rundle Canal and Three Sisters Golf Course, and Various Trails

August 08, 2017

  • Effective Date: Tuesday, August 8, 2017 until further notice
  • Where: Area Surrounding Quarry Lake and Grassi Lakes Day Use Area, surrounding trails including the Rundle Canal dike trail, Lowline, Reclaimer, Highline west switchback connector, Highline middle connector at Quarry Lake, Powerline, Backdoor, Killer Bees, Nector Noodle and Ziggy's trails, areas East of Peaks of Grassi between 742 and Three Sisters Golf Course.  Note that Quarry Lake and the main meadow of the off-leash park remain open.  Download map PDF.
  • Why: Bear Encounter that resulted in injuries and numerous bears feeding on berries in the area.

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in Kananaskis Country at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray (video).

  • Effective Date: July 28, 2017 until further notice
  • Where: Canmore Nordic Centre
  • Why: Multiple sightings of  black bears and grizzly bears feeding on berries throughout Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park.

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in Kananaskis Country at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
