  • Construction Closure - Spray Lakes Road and Grassi Lakes Day Use

    June 28, 2018

    • When: July 16th until October 30th, 2018
    • Where: Spray Lakes Road below Whiteman’s Pond and Grassi Lakes Day Use Area. Upper and Lower Grassi Lake and the climbing area is closed. Hiking trails from the Grassi Lakes Day Use Area trailhead to the northeast shoreline of Lower Grassi Lake are open. Access to Riders of Rohan is open. See a map of the closure.
    • What is open: The Grassi Lakes Trail ("more difficult" trail) past the falls up to the viewing area of the first lake and the wide road back down ("easy" trail). Trails around both lakes are closed to access.
    • Why: Over the last 25 years, use on the Spray Lakes Road has substantially increased and the infrastructure supporting the road surface requires repairs. The Project involves anchoring the gabion walls under the Spray Lakes Road below Whiteman’s Pond, covering the face of the gabion wall with shotcrete, and replacing the guardrail and fence.

See the Spray Lakes Road and Grassi Lakes Day Use Closure FAQ.

The road construction is located directly above the Grassi Lakes and the climbing area. To reduce the rock hazard to climbers and hikers, Alberta Parks will close these areas.  There will be substantial traffic delays from the bottom of the Spray Lakes Road to the top of Whiteman’s Gap.  Alberta Parks encourages users to access their desired destination in the Spray Valley via Hwy 40 through Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.

Visitors looking for alternatives to Grassi Lakes hiking and climbing opportunities can call the Kananaskis Information Line at 1-403-678-0760 or stop at a Kananaskis Information Centre such as Barrier Lake, Bow Valley or Peter Lougheed.
