As part of our ongoing commitment to provide quality recreational opportunities and keep Albertans informed, Alberta Parks is providing notice of campground and trail upgrades at Fish Lake Provincial Recreation Area (PRA).
In late September 2017, Alberta Parks began campground refurbishment at Fish Lake PRA, which is located within the David Thompson corridor. This project is Phase 1 of a multi-phase campground and day use area upgrading and expansion project. Subsequent phases of the project will undergo additional public participation processes, which are expected to begin in 2019.
The campground at Fish Lake PRA currently offers 80 un-serviced campsites and 24 sites with 20 amp service. Many of the sites have smaller footprints that are not capable of accommodating modern RVs. A number of sites have activity pads on the wrong side of the campsite for RVs. The Phase 1 Campground Refurbishment project will upgrade campsites to meet modern standards. The exact nature of the work will vary from site to site, but the full scope of the work may include tree removal, enlarging campsite footprint, leveling existing gravel sites, and moving boulders.
Refurbishment work will be focused on loops 4 and 5 (see maps attached), however work may also occur in the other camp loops. Loops 4 and 5 will be closed up to several weeks ahead of schedule (visit the Fish Lake PRA page at www.albertaparks.ca for information on closures).
Upgrades to the 1 kilometer interpretive loop located on the Northwest side of Fisk Lake (also known as Shunda Lake) will begin September 2018. Upgrades could include trail leveling, resurfacing, and construction of boardwalks to improve trail conditions across wet areas. Portions of the interpretive trail may be closed throughout the fall season.
Visitors are asked to stay out of closed areas for their own safety. Visitors should expect the presence of heavy equipment, construction vehicles, and increased noise levels during the construction period.
