Alberta Parks has recently approved the Hubert Lake Wildland Provincial Park (WPP) Trail Plan.
Hubert Lake WPP was established in 2000 and is 9,665 hectares in size. Primary recreation activities include off highway vehicle (OHV) use/snowmobiling and hunting. Since establishment, there were no officially designated OHV trails within the park, with OHV access on pre-existing industrial roads, seismic lines, and pipelines. In 2015/16 Alberta Parks consulted with targeted stakeholders on this trail planning project to encourage safer and more responsible recreational use, to promote the conservation of biological diversity, and to assist in the restoration of caribou habitat.
A trail inventory was completed in the park and stakeholders were informed about the trail planning and invited to provide input. Meetings were held with interested stakeholders. Comments, along with historical and environmental reviews were documented to prepare a final trail plan that will shape the management of the park. This trail plan identifies 85 km of trails in the park and will support initiatives within the Government of Alberta’s Land Use Framework to manage Alberta’s land and natural resources to achieve Alberta’s long-term economic, environmental and social goals.
