Operational dates of water service vary. Generally, non-potable water is available for opening weekend and potable water becomes available 1-2 weeks later depending on weather. Operational dates of the dump station vary due to ground frost, although it is typically open at the end of May. Cell service can be unreliable at times depending on the service provider. Only one camping unit can fit at this site. This site is located near the shower building and amphitheater; it is not directly in a campsite loop.
Responsibilities
In addition to the key responsibilities outlined in the volunteer host description, hosts at Gregg Lake have the following site-specific duties:
- Drive the campground loops throughout William A. Switzer Park (Gregg Lake, Graveyard Lake, Cache Lake, Halfway, and Jarvis Lake) each morning starting at approximately 8 am to perform occupancy checks.
- Report any discrepancies when delivering occupancy check sheets to staff each morning for processing and follow-up.
- Educate visitors about park regulations (e.g., dogs on leash) and report more serious non-compliance issues (e.g., messy sites, noise complaints) to park rangers.
- Perform light site maintenance duties such as removing registration tags from vacated sites and emptying fire pits.
- Potential to assist with distributing Adventure Packs interpretive program.
Additional Information
- Hosts will receive access to an Alberta Parks vehicle for daily occupancy checks. Applicants need a valid driver’s license and a clean abstract. The vehicle is for volunteer tasks only, not personal use.
- The primary responsibility at this host site is completing occupancy checks each morning during the five scheduled days per week. Additional duties have flexible timing and can be completed as availability allows.
- Hosts are not responsible for enforcement and must not engage in situations that require additional follow-up from staff. This role supports the rangers and visitor services team by helping to verify if campers are registered and present.
