Lakeland, Shaw Lake Day Use Area

  • Shaw Lake Day Use Area in Lakeland Provincial Park is located 25 km northeast of Lac La Biche off Hwy. 881, with approximately 13 km of that being gravel. The drive from Edmonton is about 3 hours.
  • Day Use Area parking lots are cleared in the winter at this site.

At the Park

  • Lakeland Provincial Park is located northeast of the hamlet of Lac La Biche, and is part of the designated Dark-Sky Preserve that spans Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area as well, offering incredible stargazing opportunities year-round.
  • Shaw Lake Day Use Area is one of many staging areas within the park, and it provides a remote front-country trail network with additional access into Lakeland's backcountry areas.
  • There are approximately 26 km of trails at Shaw Lake Day Use Area that provide access to forest and wetlands that support many species of birds and other wildlife throughout the seasons.
  • The groomed trails of Shaw Lake attract novice to advance skiers, as there are various circuits of trails in the area for each level of skier.
  • The trails are used and promoted by the Lac La Biche Nordic Ski Club throughout the winter months. The trail system is operated and maintained by the Lac La Biche Nordic Ski Club and Alberta Parks.

  • Discover the trails on your own with cross country ski rentals from the Lac La Biche Nordic Ski Club or snowshoe rentals from the community’s multiplex, the Bold Center.

  • Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park has 10 year-round comfort camping cabins available for winter stays.
  • The hamlet of Lac La Biche also offers a selection of accommodations such as hotels, motels, and Bed & Breakfasts.

Tips

  • Check the Lac La Biche Nordic Ski Club Facebook page for ongoing trail condition updates throughout the season.
  • The best area to snowshoe at Shaw Lake Day Use Area is on the lake (when safe to do so), to respect the groomed trails that are set for skate skiing and classic cross country skiing.
