Park Rangers play key roles in facilitating safe and positive experiences for park visitors. Acting as ambassadors for the protection of Alberta's rich natural heritage and for responsible park use and enjoyment, these front-line staff support the mandated purposes of Alberta Parks
Park Ranger – Role
Park Rangers are the primary field contact for park visitors and dedicated to educating and encouraging voluntary compliance with parks legislation. In this position you will:
- Actively support a positive camping and recreational experience by delivering exceptional customer service, providing accurate information, and support issue resolution to park visitors.
- Travel by foot, bike, motor vehicle, or off-highway vehicle to rove trails, campgrounds, and day use areas to meet and communicate with a wide range of park users.
- Have strong understanding of the Provincial Parks Act and Regulations as necessary to educate visitors and stakeholders of park rules, as well as encourage voluntary compliance when required.
- Monitor site conditions, respond to issues, and foster respectful behavior through information sharing and education.
- Park Ranger will support and follow emergency response protocols for both staff and visitors, which may include activation of Park Emergency Response Plans (e.g. missing persons).
- Support the installation of signage (e.g. warnings/advisories, boundary signage).
- Park Rangers will comply with the occupational health and safety program.
Lead Park Ranger – Role
The Lead Park Ranger is a leadership position that supports a team of Park Rangers. In addition to the regular Park Ranger responsibilities, Lead Park Rangers will:
- Mentor and assist a team of Park Rangers at the site level to meet priorities set by the Park Ranger Team Lead or Supervisor
- Effectively coach and guide the team on Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) procedures. Ensure the team has the proper resources and knowledge to be successful and safe in their duties.
- Work collaboratively with other work area staff to ensure effective and efficient operations within their designated park or district.
Qualifications
The minimum qualifications for these roles are:
- Park Ranger: High school diploma plus some related experience
- Lead Park Ranger: High school diploma and one year of related experience and must have strong communication and/or leadership experience.
- Equivalencies one year experience for one year education, or one year education for one year experience will be considered.
- Preference may be given to candidates enrolled in or having completed post-secondary education in Natural Resource related programs, Environmental Sciences, Recreation or Tourism Management, Criminology/Justice Studies or other related programs
Both Park Ranger and Lead Park Rangers are required to have:
- Valid Class 5 Operator’s License
- Valid Standard First Aid Certificate with current CPR Level "C" Certificate & AED
- Final candidates must also provide a Criminal Record Check and a 5-year Driver's Abstract.
In addition to the requirements listed above, these roles benefit from experience, knowledge, and competency in effective communication with the public and stakeholders, including conflict resolution; safe use of hand and power tools; valid certifications for chainsaw operation, ATV, and UTV; understanding of Indigenous cultures; completion of Incident Command System (ICS 100) training; outdoor skills certifications; familiarity with Alberta’s flora and fauna; and a thorough knowledge of the Alberta Parks Act and its regulations.
