Legal Land Description
Boreal Forest Natural Region

Cooking Lake-Blackfoot is the site of the annual Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival and is part of the new Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve, announced Sept. 3/06 by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada; the preserve also includes Elk Island National Park. Establishing the preserve will be accomplished by using responsible lighting practices, including fully-shielded luminaries, minimum light levels, energy efficient lamps, aiming lights downward, and reducing lighting at night.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR HUNTERS: To hunt in this PRA, hunters must obtain a firearms discharge permit & attend a hunting orientation session. For information, call 780-922-3293. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND: discharging firearms is not permitted within 400 metres of main staging areas or within 200 metres of Meadow, Lost Lake & Running Dog backcountry shelters (obtain a site map for staging area & shelter locations); motorized access is not permitted beyond main staging areas; Elk Island National Park abuts the north boundary of the recreation area (a 2-metre fence running east & west between the park and recreation area delineates the boundary); hunting in national parks can result in a fine of up to $10,000.00 &/or 6 months imprisonment.
