Join us for a tour of the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory and experience how we are learning more about the birds that call the Boreal Forest home each summer.  See how we catch these tiny songbirds and if you are lucky, you might even get the chance to see one of these tiny songbirds up close!

    • Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9:00-11:00 am

    Ever wonder how our ancestors survived? Or how to stay alive if you were lost?

    Boreal Bushcraft is an evening campfire program where everyone has the chance to learn about outdoor survival skills!

    • Try out throwing sticks used for hunting.
    • Sharpen your fire and shelter making skills.
    • Figure out which plants could save your life.
    • Make some rock art.

    Bannock making and native plant treats top off the evening!

    If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about one of Alberta’s top carnivores, come on down to our amphitheatre for The Dog Who Cried Wolf!  In this show we will follow an off-leash poodle as she learns what it takes to be a wolf  in the boreal forest, and discovers that being wild and free is not all it’s cracked up to be.  All ages are welcome to this interactive and informative production!

    We were made for each other! Guided walk

    There is more going on in the boreal forest than meets the eye. Relationships here ensure a healthy ecosystem. Plants and pollinators depend on each other, lichen pairs up algae and a fungus, and fire starts a new generation of pine trees. Come join our 1 hour nature walk to discover some of the hidden wonders of the forest.  Interactive activities and beautiful stops mean that there is something for everyone! All ages are welcome.

    Wildcrafted Colour: Dyeing With Invasive Plants Weekend Workshop

    Immerse yourself in the wild beauty of Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park during this weekend learning experience. Textile artist Megan Samms will lead you through the process of preparing and dyeing natural fibres using invasive plants harvested from the boreal forest.

    • $475.00 for shared room (bring a friend!)
    • $525.00 for private room
    • Cost includes:
      • instruction,
      • materials,
      • 2 nights accommodation at the Nest Comfort Camping, and
      • meals from Friday night to Sunday lunch.
    • Participants will go home with the knowledge to dye their own textiles and with small samples of cotton fabric and wool yarn that they have dyed.
    • Download and complete a Registration Form; space is limited to 10 people!

    If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about one of Alberta’s top carnivores, come on down to our amphitheatre for The Dog Who Cried Wolf!  In this show we will follow an off-leash poodle as she learns what it takes to be a wolf  in the boreal forest, and discovers that being wild and free is not all it’s cracked up to be.  All ages are welcome to this interactive and informative production!

    Did you know that thousands of tiny songbirds will travel through Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park on their annual migrations? Join us for a tour of the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory and experience how we are learning more about the birds that call the Boreal Forest home each summer.  See how we catch these tiny songbirds and if you are lucky, you might even get the chance to see one of these tiny songbirds up close!

    • Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9:00-11:00 am
    • Bird banding does not take place in rain or high winds. If the weather is doubtful, call the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation to confirm whether the public banding lab tour is taking place.

    Boreal Bushcraft

    Ever wonder how our ancestors survived? Or how to stay alive if you were lost?

    Boreal Bushcraft is an evening campfire program where everyone has the chance to learn about outdoor survival skills!

    • Try out throwing sticks used for hunting.
    • Sharpen your fire and shelter making skills.
    • Figure out which plants could save your life.
    • Make some rock art.

    Bannock making and native plant treats top off the evening!

    We were made for each other! Guided walk

    There is more going on in the boreal forest than meets the eye. Relationships here ensure a healthy ecosystem. Plants and pollinators depend on each other, lichen pairs up algae and a fungus, and fire starts a new generation of pine trees. Come join our 1 hour nature walk to discover some of the hidden wonders of the forest.  Interactive activities and beautiful stops mean that there is something for everyone! All ages are welcome.
