Notice - Backcountry Fire Ban

July 19, 2017

  • There is a fire BAN for backcountry campgrounds in Kananaskis.
  • The rest of Kananaskis Country is under a fire RESTRICTION.

Affected Areas

Bear Closure - Chester Lake Trail and Day Use Area

July 15, 2017

  • Effective Date: July 15, 2017 until further notice
  • Where: Chester Lake trail and Day Use Area
  • Why: Grizzly bear feeding in lake area
  • The High Rockies Trail is open through the closure.  Travellers must move directly through and not venture off the trail. The Chester Lake Day Use Area cannot be used to access the High Rockies Trail.

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in Kananaskis Country at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray (video).

Construction Closure - Canyon Interpretive Trail

June 15, 2017

Due to construction at the Pocaterra Dam on the north end of Lower Kananaskis Lake, the Canyon Interpretive Trail is closed until further notice.

Construction Advisory - William Watson Lodge Cabins

May 12, 2017

There will be cabin construction taking place at William Watson Lodge from April 10th October 31st. Cabins C and D will remain out of commission until the end of October.

Bear Closure - Valleyview Trail

April 01, 2017

  • Effective Date: Saturday, April 1, 2017 until further notice
  • Where: Valleyview Trail
  • Why: Permanent Bear Closure

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in Kananaskis Country at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

There is a bear closure in place for Valleyview Trail from the gate south of Elpoca Day Use to the gate North of Little Highwood Pass Parking lot. The closure also includes all access to this area from Highway 40.
