Construction Closure - Highwood Meadows Interpretive Trail

September 19, 2017

  • Effective Date: September 19 until October 6, 2017
  • Where: Highwood Meadows Trail boardwalk
  • Why: Construction for boardwalk replacement.
  • The access to Ptarmigan Cirque Trail will remain open, but the boardwalk is to be closed to the public for the duration of the project.
  • Caution should be used, particularly around heavy equipment, and all posted signage should be obeyed.

Bear Warning - Peter Lougheed Discovery Centre and Canyon Dump Station

September 16, 2017

  • Effective Date: September 16, 2017 until further notice
  • Where: Peter Lougheed Discovery Centre and Canyon Dump Station.
  • Why: Multiple grizzly bears travelling through the area.

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in Kananaskis Country at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray (video).

Please report all bear sightings immediately to 403-591-7755.

Bear Closure - Woolley Trail, Meadow Trail, Rockwall Interpretive to and from Elkwood Campground and Discovery Centre

September 16, 2017

  • Effective Date: September 16, 2017 until further notice
  • Where: Wooley trail and Meadow trail from Elkwood Campground to the Peter Lougheed Discovery Centre, Rockwall Interpretive trail and surrounding areas.
  • Why: Multiple grizzly bears feeding in the area.

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in Kananaskis Country at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray (video).

  • Where: Pocaterra Dam on the north end of Lower Kananaskis Lake to the Canyon Interpretive Trail
  • Why: Due to flood damage and construction activities.

Construction Advisory - William Watson Lodge Cabins

May 12, 2017

  • Effective Date: April 10, 2017 to October 31, 2017
  • Where: William Watson Lodge
  • Why: For construction activities on Cabins C and D and will remain fully out of commission.

  • Effective Date: Saturday, April 1, 2017 until further notice
  • Where: Valleyview Trail
  • Why: Permanent Bear Closure

There is a bear closure in place for Valleyview Trail from the gate south of Elpoca Day Use to the gate North of Little Highwood Pass Parking lot. The closure also includes all access to this area from Highway 40.
