Camper Satisfaction Survey

Campers' overall satisfaction is a performance measure for Parks Division, reported in the Tourism, Parks and Recreation Annual Report. To assess satisfaction, we conduct an annual camper satisfaction survey.

The camper satisfaction survey includes a cross-section of 105 auto accessible campgrounds. The campgrounds chosen represent different levels of visitation, geographic locations and operational type (operational type refers to operated under contract or directly by the Government of Alberta). A random sample of adult campers is surveyed at approximately one quarter of these campgrounds each year on a 4-year rotation.

Survey of Albertans

  • 2011 Survey of Albertans Research Findings
  • Telephone survey conducted at the start of every calendar year for Alberta Tourism, Parks & Recreation
  • 31.5% of respondents had visited a provincial park in the previous 12 months; 59% of respondents claimed to have visited a provincial park; however, when these answers were validated, a large number of respondents had actually visited national and other parks - not provincial parks.

Alberta Recreation Survey

  • Alberta Recreation Survey conducted every four years
  • Co-operative effort between Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation and the cities of Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge
  • After walking and golf, camping was the third most cited favourite leisure or recreation activity.

Public Opinion Survey

Survey of Albertans' Priorities for Provincial Parks Report

  • Conducted in summer 2008
  • Intended to identify Albertans' perspectives on future priorities for the provincial park system
  • Consisted of:
    • a province-wide telephone survey of 1,208 Albertans (both park visitors and non-visitors); and
    • an on-line survey of 983 visitors who had been invited to participate while at a wide range of provincial parks.

The report includes visitor profile information. It also identifies respondents' top priorities for improving Alberta's parks system:

  • setting aside land in an undisturbed state and protecting the province's environment and natural heritage;
  • improving the quality and condition of existing facilities (like electrified sites and showers/washrooms);
  • increasing enforcement (of rules within parks and rules related to environmental protection);
  • developing a centralized and improved reservation system;
  • improving awareness of the parks system; and
  • consulting with the public.
