Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation (TPR) has recently added
nearly 1000 hectares of land to Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park.
The land sale was initiated by the seller, and the lands were
purchased at fair market value based on an independent
appraisal.
The first management objective of Alberta Parks is to inventory
the natural and cultural features of the new lands, and to
determine the immediate conservation needs. These inventories were
initiated during the summer of 2011, and documented many important
wildlife species and cultural sites. Once these inventories are
completed, a process will be undertaken to determine the
appropriate conservation management and visitor activities for the
new lands.
In alignment with the Plan for Parks, future consultation will
occur on proposed management planning for the new lands.
Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park is located near the south border
of Alberta along the Milk River and provides recreation
opportunities and ensures protection of one of the North American
Plains' largest concentrations of rock art.
